Get Ready To Tap!

I just can’t wait til May 25th.  It’s National Tap Dance Day in America.

Signed into law in 1989 by President George H.W. Bush, the day celebrates the birthday of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.  Bojangles appeared in several Shirley Temple movies and was honored by Sammy Davis Jr. in the song “Mr. Bojangles.”  Sammy, of course, was a talented hoofer as was Gregory Hines and his protege, Savion Glover.  And who doesn’t love watching Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire or Ann Miller, probably the most famous woman hoofer with the longest legs?  Where have all the tap dancers gone?  Why don’t we see tap on “Dancing with The Stars?”

A couple years ago I joined a park district tap class while on vacation on Marco Island.  Bought my shoes and shuffle, hop, stepped with a chorus line of other energetic gals of a certain age.  What fun!  It didn’t matter that I couldn’t follow the “grapevine” step or that my sense of rhythm was a bit off-beat.  There was music and laughter and great exercise.  Tap is an incredible workout challenging your body and mind.  Great for both cardio and concentration.  I promised to take classes when I returned home – but so far, have been tapped out.

It’s time.  I have a goal.  I’ve got to get ready.  Going home to polish my shoes and find a class for tapless beginners.  On May 25th you’ll hear me dancing my way through the day.  I hope you’ll join me.  I’ll set up a Pinterest file for pictures when we get closer to the celebration so we can all share our tapping talent.  Stay tuned for more information.

By the way – National Tap Dance Day is also celebrated in other countries – not just America.  Seems to be very popular in Japan, Australia, India and Iceland among other places.  Iceland?  Interesting.  So if you have friends around the world, please encourage them to join the Minervas in celebrating on May 25th.  Mr. Bojangles will be very honored.
