The latest craze at my fitness center is Zumba – and one day I’ll join in, after I’m stronger and more nimble on my feet.  First, I need a nap.

The hype is that Zumba makes exercise fun.  It’s Latin dance moves for an aerobic workout that’s fun.  Anyone who’s watched “Dancing with The Stars” knows the athleticism demanded in a samba with Max, as well as the party fun.  You shake your booty and everything else. Kirstie Alley is a great example of the benefits of dance to slim & trim and energize.

According to, Zumba delivers great interval training, calorie burning, and core muscle strengthening – that’s your abdomen, back, butt, and upper legs.  All good reasons to get on the Zumba train.

(Question – can Zumba be a verb?  Does one Zumba???  Can I say I Zumbad today – if I ever do???)

If you’re ready for the adventure, keep in mind – Zumba can be strenuous.  To begin, you might want to look for a lower impact, beginner class, or a Gold Zumba which is designed for seniors.  There are also Aqua Zumba programs providing many of the benefits with less stress and strain.

Check with your local park district, YMCA/YWCA, community center or health club.  There are currently more than 20,000 certified instructors so you’re sure to find a group that is waiting for you to join in.
