Mickey Rooney Speaks Out

How sad it was a few weeks ago to see Mickey Rooney testify before the Senate on his personal experience as the victim of elder abuse.  What a pitiful commentary on society that our values and respect for other humans, particularly those who are frail, are in such a deplorable state.  We have rallied to the aid of children suffering from neglect or abuse.  We need to bring the same commitment to our aging neighbors, friends, and relatives who may not be able to speak out against their abusers.

While statistics are not readily available – the voiceless are difficult to count – the estimates are grim.  The Gerontologist suggests that only 1 in 14 incidents of abuse in a domestic setting are ever identified yet it’s estimated that between 1 and 2 million Americans 65 or older have been “injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection.”  (Elder Mistreatment: Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation in an Aging America.)

I desperately hope this is not in my future, or in yours, my friends.
